Standing on the northern coast of the UAE, you are at the edge of a serene natural wonder – the Umm Al Quwain Coastal Lagoon. Spanning 138 km2, this remarkable lagoon is alive with thriving mangrove forests, salt marshes and seagrass meadows. These habitats protect the coastline, support fisheries and absorb carbon from the atmosphere, making them incredibly valuable for people and nature. The mangroves, first established in 2007, continue to grow today, and through this monitoring station, we aim to track their expansion and growth. The lagoon is also a vibrant hotspot for wildlife, recognized internationally as a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
