This space holds the soil dug up to create the side-channel features. It used to be overrun by non-native weeds and Himalayan blackberry. Now, native plants, grasses, and wildflowers have been planted to bring back the natural upland habitat.

Transformed from an impenetrable thicket of invasive Himalayan blackberry, noxious weeds, and other non-native plants, this area underwent a revitalization. Through thoughtful regrading that reconnected the floodplain to the river, the landscape now thrives with recently-planted native trees, shrubs, grasses, and wildflowers, fostering a harmonious and vibrant natural habitat for wildlife.

In front of you is a newly-created side channel: a low-lying area that receives water at higher flows, creating a safe haven for juvenile salmonids and other native fish where they can escape predation and find food.

Discover the newly crafted side-channel habitat, designed as a nurturing haven for juvenile salmonids and other native fish species. This sanctuary provides a haven for smaller fish, offering a refuge from the main river's predators and a bountiful space for them to forage and thrive.
