City of Hobart

Hobart Rivulet in South Hobart, Tasmania is an important wildlife corridor and provides habitat for a wide range of birds and aquatic wildlife, including the much-loved local platypus population and native hens, commonly referred to as turbo chooks. City of Hobart is replacing weeds with native plants to restore this ecologically important creekbank. The Rivulet Regeneration Project aims to reduce bank erosion and improve water quality and habitat by targeting weeds and replanting with local native plants. A healthy riparian zone also builds resilience to minor flooding.

When it comes to the riparian zone, messy is good! Regenerating the creekbank involves planting a mosaic of native grasses on the toe of the bank and shrubs and trees on mid-section and top of bank to replicate nature. Varied vegetation strucutre, rocks and fallen branches on the creekbank are important for a healty riparian zone.

Habitat diversity is the key to supporting native wildlife so we have planted a diverse range of local Tasmanian native species including Poa labillardierei (silver tussockgrass), Pomaderris apetala (dogwood), Carex appressa (a wet loving sedge), Dianella tasmanica (flaxlily), Goodenia ovata (native primrose), Bursaria spinosa (prickly box), Leptospermum scoparium (teatree), Lomandra longifolia (sagg), Diplarrena moraea (white flag iris) and Eucalyptus viminalis (white gum).

Ongoing weed management will continue through to 2028, to allow the native species to establish without competition from weeds. Treatment will target invasive species including blackberry, arum lily, ivy, blue periwnkle, forget-me-not and tutsan.

We are excited to see the native revegetation establish over time, and look forward to the native hens and platypus making use of restored wildlife habitat.

The project received grant funding from the Australian Government's Local Environmental Projects Program.
