The Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve is one of six protected areas and field stations managed by the UC Davis Natural Reserve System.

Bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum) are historically rare habitats in the reserve. However, the 2020 fires have knocked back old growth interior live oak forests (Quercus wislizeni) which has seemingly created opportuities for the spread of bigleaf maple in these habitats. Your pictures will provide insight into this process over time.

This old cleared grassland will be the focus of a restoration experiment aimed at regenerating this chaparral/blue oak savannah 'ecotone' to a state that inhibits off-trail hiking.
