This small stream flows down the eastern slope of Rocky Face Ridge, one of the many long ridges within the Ridge and Valley Province of the southern Appalachians. Depending on the time of year and amount of rainfall, the flow down this scenic cascade can be a torrent or a trickle. A great diversity of invertebrates and salamanders make their home here.

In 2025, the native plant garden was established to add beauty to the campus, benefit pollinators, and educate our community about the value of planting natives.  It incorporates existing trees and other plants and has paths which weave through the area, leading to various seating spots. The inclusion of plants which bloom at different times ensures that there is color throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Watch as the garden grows through the seasons!

Native Plant Garden

A forest is a dynamic ecosystem. When trees fall, gaps of light are created which fosters the growth of plants on the forest floor. Trees which fall into the stream provide longterm sources of nutrients to this ecosystem as the wood slowly decomposes. The woody debris also adds structure to the stream, increasing the habitat complexity for the many animals living there, such as the larvae of caddisflies, mayflies, and stoneflies.
