The coastal habitats conserved at Humboldt Bay and Castle Rock National Wildlfie Refuges - from lush wetlands to fragile dunes and jutting seastacks - support an incredible wealth of plants, fish, and wildlife.

Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge

You are standing at the leading edge of a large open area of moving sand, called a dunefield, which was likely set into motion as the result of a "megaquake" in 1700. Sand has continued to migrate east reaching the Mad River Slough in 2024. Your participation in photo chronicling the movement of the dunefield contributes to ongoing research that is providing information to prepare for and adapt to climate change along our coast.
