Oxbow, Inc. is a nonprofit land trust dedicated to protecting and restoring over 1,600 acres of floodplain wetlands, forests, and farmland at the confluence of the Great Miami and Ohio Rivers near Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Through land conservation, habitat restoration, education, and community engagement, Oxbow works to preserve this nationally significant natural area for wildlife and future generations.

Welcome to a future pollinator habitat! This 5 acre field- along with a 30 ft buffer along the entire road- was planted with native plants in June of 2026. Prior to that, it was used as farmland. Flood-resistant native seeds were dispersed into the meadow along with a nurse crop of oats. The oats will grow fast in the first year, providing shade and helping to keep out weeds, while the native seeds get established in the soil. 

After the first year, the oats will die off, leaving the native flowers, grasses, and sedges. Once established, these plants will provide valuable meadow habitat for the pollinators, birds, and small mammals that call the Oxbow home! 

Plants to keep an eye out for include: queen of the prairie, goldenrod, beardtongue, flase indigo, dense blazing star, lance-fruited oval sedge, prairie dock, asters, milkweeds, rattlesnake master, and many more.
