F/SOS (Photography, Solidarity and Social Works Association) is a Portuguese nonprofit organization that connects photography, culture, education, and environmental stewardship through community-based projects. As the founder of the F/262 International Photography Festival, F/SOS develops initiatives that bring together municipalities, environmental organizations, researchers, artists, and local communities.

Through Cuidar das Margens e do Campo, F/SOS is launching Portugal's first Chronolog network, using participatory photography to monitor environmental change, engage the public in citizen science, and create a long-term visual archive of the region's natural and cultural landscapes.

Located on the southern shore of the Bay of São Martinho do Porto, the Great Dune of Salir do Porto is one of Portugal's most remarkable coastal landscapes and is home to the country's largest dune system.

Formed over thousands of years through the continuous action of wind, tides, and sediment transport, the dune is a living landscape that is constantly evolving. Its fragile ecosystem supports specialized coastal vegetation that helps stabilize the sand, protects the coastline from erosion, and provides habitat for a variety of wildlife.

From this Chronolog station, visitors can help document the long-term evolution of the dune by photographing the same landscape over time. Together, these images create a visual record of seasonal change, vegetation growth, coastal dynamics, and the ongoing interaction between natural processes and human activity.

SOS-203 | Salir do Porto – Dune of Salir do Porto

Located where the Óbidos Lagoon meets the Atlantic Ocean, Foz do Arelho is one of Portugal's most dynamic coastal landscapes. This constantly changing environment is shaped by tides, waves, sediment transport, and the natural opening and closing of the lagoon's inlet.

The position of the lagoon's opening, known locally as the aberta, changes over time as a result of natural coastal processes. These changes influence water circulation, sediment deposition, local habitats, navigation, and the surrounding beaches. Periodically, public authorities intervene to reopen the inlet when natural closure affects the ecological balance and water exchange between the lagoon and the sea.

From this observation point, visitors can help document these transformations by photographing the same view over time. Together, these images create a long-term visual record of one of Portugal's most fascinating and ever-changing coastal environments.

SOS-202 | Foz do Arelho – Óbidos Lagoon Inlet

Located in the heart of Caldas da Rainha, Parque D. Carlos I is one of Portugal's most historic public parks and a defining part of the city's cultural and natural heritage. Designed in the late 19th century, the park combines landscaped gardens, mature trees, lakes, and open green spaces that have been enjoyed by generations of residents and visitors.

Throughout the year, the park transforms with the changing seasons. Trees flower and shed their leaves, wildlife adapts to the rhythms of nature, and the landscape reflects both natural cycles and the care of those who maintain it.

From this Chronolog station, visitors can help document these gradual changes by photographing the same view over time. Together, these images create a living archive of one of Caldas da Rainha's most iconic public spaces.

SOS-205 | Parque D. Carlos I – Caldas da Rainha

Located on the eastern arm of the Óbidos Lagoon, the Cais Palafítico da Barrosa is one of Nadadouro's most important natural and cultural landmarks. Overlooking the Barrosa Arm of the lagoon, this observation point offers a unique perspective on one of Portugal's most valuable coastal ecosystems.

The Barrosa Arm is recognized for its exceptional ecological importance, supporting wetlands, salt marshes, mudflats, native vegetation, fish nurseries, and a remarkable diversity of resident and migratory bird species. It is also one of the lagoon's most popular locations for birdwatching and nature observation.

From this Chronolog station, visitors help document how the landscape changes throughout the seasons, recording fluctuations in water levels, vegetation, sediment dynamics, and the relationship between nature and the local community.

SOS-201 | Nadadouro – Cais Palafítico da Barrosa

Paul de Tornada is one of the most important freshwater wetlands in western Portugal and a vital refuge for wildlife. Managed through ongoing conservation and habitat restoration, this protected area supports a remarkable diversity of birds, amphibians, insects, mammals, and native plant species.

The wetland changes continuously throughout the year as water levels rise and fall, vegetation regenerates, and wildlife responds to the changing seasons. These natural cycles make Paul de Tornada an ideal location for long-term environmental observation.

From this Chronolog station, visitors are invited to photograph the same landscape over time, helping create a visual record of ecological change. Together, these images document habitat restoration, seasonal variation, and the resilience of one of the region's most valuable ecosystems.
