About this site

In 2022, the area next to the Colonial Heights Overlook was completely overrun by Wisteria Sinensis, an invasive vine. Over the course of 2023, Colonial Heights staff mechanically removed the Wisteria, leaving just one central tree; the only survivor of the near-total wisteria coverage. In March 2024, FOLAR and JRA teamed up with volunteers to plant the 98 native trees and shrubs seen here in tree tubes. We are documenting the return of native plants to the area; what herbacious plants may return naturally to the space, and the trees as they grow over the years.

About Friends of the Lower Appomattox River

FOLAR works in partnership with the community to conserve, protect, and promote the Appomattox River for all to enjoy. We envision a welcoming Blueway-Greenway of extraordinary beauty and cultural richness that forever connects nature, people, and vibrant communities.

We are committed to creating a welcoming place and to encourage everyone to actively connect, learn, share, and enjoy the benefits of a healthy river environment. The importance of FOLAR’s mission is enormous as is the potential strength of our communities and partners engaged in protecting and strengthening our Blueway-Greenway—as a path to wellness, conservation, and prosperity.
