This site is located at the edge of the Kent Mitchell Trail, a walking trail full of hammocks that go throughout the marsh of Bald Head Island. This 800 acre maritime forest is ideal for bird and wildlife watching.
The Bald Head Island Conservancy is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1983. We discover, learn, conserve, and preserve is the mission of the Conservancy. The Conservancy is located in a unique area within the Smith Island Complex which includes Bald Head, Middle and Bluff Islands, all of which are bounded by the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. The Conservancy sponsors and facilitates scientific research that benefits coastal communities and provides numerous recreational and educational activities to the public. In collaboration with various organizations, the Conservancy is uniquely poised to become a national leader in barrier island conservation.
