Brown's Woods is one of the largest tracts of woodland in a metropolitan area in Iowa, which makes it unique. Unfortunately, this area has degraded over time due to invasive plant species that are causing a reduction in biodiversity of this site. Restoration of this site involves removing invasive species and thinning the canopy to create a more healthy woodland dominated by oaks, hickories, and walnuts with a healthy herbaceous layer below. Polk County Conservation hopes to improve wildlife habitat within this site and provide an enhanced natual area for visitors to enjoy.
Polk County Conservation's mission is to provide the citizens of Polk County with quality outdoor recreation, conservation education, and long term protection of Polk County’s natural heritage.
