This Chronolog station provides long-term monitoring of the changing dune structure and shoreline along Malaquite Beach adjacent to the gulf.
Dunes serve as a natural barrier, protecting the island from storm surges and powerful waves during hurricanes and tropical storms. The vegetation that grows on them, such as sea oats and railroad vine, helps anchor the sand, preventing erosion. In addition to their protective role, dunes provide essential habitat for wildlife and shield the island’s interior from the harsh coastal conditions of the gulf.
