Thank you for helping Standley Lake Regional Park and Wildlife Refuge monitor the largest rookery in the City of Westminster, also known as Bird Island! Did you know a rookery is a communal nesting ground for herons, cormorants, pelicans, and even owls? These feathered residents use Bird Island to breed and raise their young. Migratory Birds arrive in the spring and either begin building or reconstructing nests so they can lay and incubate their eggs. Owls use existing nests year-round and can be easily spotted in the winter when all other birds have migrated south. With your help, Standley Lake staff will be able to monitor Bird Island with the changing seasons and throughout the years. The photos submitted will track any changes related to the arrival of different migratory birds, the number of nests that are built or reconstructed, and the rookeries size in the coming years.

About Standley Lake Regional Park & Wildlife Refuge

Standley Lake is a multi-use recreation and water-storage facility, and is the drinking water supply for Westminster, Northglenn, and Thornton. With 1,063-acres of surface area, Standley Lake is Westminster’s largest body of water. It is also the Denver metropolitan area’s third largest reservoir. In addition to hiking, bicycling, camping, wildlife viewing and other park-based recreational activities, the lake offers visitors numerous opportunities for fishing and paddling. There is a wealth of history surrounding Standley Lake that dates back over one hundred years.
