St. John's Pond was used as a harbor for colonists in the 17th century, an ice-skating rink for students in the 1930s, and as early as 1970, a site for "ponding"- the campus tradition whereby students throw friends into the water on their birthdays. The site affords an ideal vantage point for savoring spectacular sunsets over the waterfront and observing shoreline restoration efforts.
