About this site

Piedmont Dam is a rolled earth-fill dam located in Freeport, Ohio, completed in 1937, and is regulated and maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The project was authorized under Section 4 of the Flood Control Act of 1938, and its primary purposes include reducing flood damage, providing recreational opportunities, and enhancing local fish and wildlife habitats.

This Chronolog is positioned in the former Public Use Area, offering a vantage point of the dam, the intake structure, and the office. The Piedmont Dam itself is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, ensuring the safety and maintenance of the dam, while the lake, which serves as a popular recreational destination, is managed by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD). This partnership between USACE and MWCD helps to balance the dual objectives of flood control and recreation.

Piedmont Lake, behind the dam, is a prime location for outdoor activities, including boating, fishing, and wildlife observation, attracting visitors year-round. The area surrounding the dam also provides access to trails and picnic areas, making it a family-friendly destination. The site plays a critical role in both the conservation of local ecosystems and the enjoyment of natural resources by the public, serving as a model of environmental management and recreational stewardship.
