Rodney Ridge is a unique area in the heart of the South Hills of Helena. It is Forest Service-managed lands directly adjacent to City of Helena lands, Prickly Pear Land Trust, and multiple private landowners, which makes it a critical landscape fuels reduction work.
Rodney Ridge has been through multiple treatments including: thinning 8” diameter and below trees, piling, pile burning and a broadcast burn through the understory. The thinning, piling, and pile burning were important treatments in order to be able to broadcast burn without killing a majority of the overstory.
In the next couple of years, a second entry of broadcast burning will occur on Rodney Ridge to further reduce fuel loading, reduce the density of young seedling and sapling trees, and restore Rodney Ridge to historically accurate fire return interval.
Sensors, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence in Real Time Fire Science (SMART FIRES) is a partnership among Montana State University, University of Montana, Salish Kootenai College, Little Big Horn College, Montana Technical University and Flathead Valley Community College. The vision of this partnership is to expand jurisdictional research capacity in order to address knowledge gaps associated with prescribed fire usage and to understand prescribed fire’s impact on individuals and communities.
