Oceanside Conservation Trust of Casco Bay (OCT) facilitates the conservation of wild or undeveloped open space, scenic areas, and historic landmarks in the Casco Bay region; fosters low-impact and respectful access to these resources; and enhances the cultural, economic and civil well-being of residents and visitors. 

OCT is part of the Momentum Conservation's Climate Change Observatory Network, a photo monitoring program designed to work with environmental organizations and communities to assist with the observation, measurement, and documentation of long-term climate change trends and climate adaptation projects.

Hagge Woods: 2012, Owned  by OCT, 2.47 Acres. 

A gift from Cyrus & Patty Hagge. Forested upland on Little Diamond Island with old growth American Beech and Shagbark Hickory trees. On the shore of Casco Bay with views of Portland.

The site looks outward on the northern facing side of the island. The photos captured at this site show the continuous erosion of the banks.

Hagge Woods - Little Diamond Island

ACE Ballfield, 2000, Easem ent, 15.4 Acres. 

Owned by the Cliff Island Corporation for Athletics, Conservation and Education (ACE), the ballfield abuts The Bluffs and is used for many community recreational purposes. A freshwater marsh, set between two beaches, hosts many migratory birds on their north-south migration. 

Photos taken at this site capture gradual erosion and sea level rise, storm surge, and the effects of the ocean on the wetland complex (such as saltwater intrusion and increased salinity). 

The ACE Ball Field Sou'west Beach - Cliff Island

Great Diamond Island is an island in Casco Bay, Maine. 

Photos taken at this site will help monitor and document changes to the sandbar area that connects Great Diamond Island to Little Diamond Island at low tide. This road is critical to providing services to both islands. Photos will help document erosion of land on Great Diamond Island and changes to the sandbar road, especially as water levels rise.

The monitoring post is accessible to Great Diamond Island residents at both high and low tide and accessible to Little Diamond residents who walk across the sandbar at low tide.

The OCT monitoring site is located on private property but close to the traveled road. We urge visitors to be respectful. You also may notice that this observation site was moved. It was no longer accessible where it was initially placed, so we adapted to this new location.

Great Diamond Island

Fowlers Beach, 1987, Easem ent, 7.18 Acres. 

Framed by Rosa rugosa and beach grass, this beautiful double-horseshoe sandy beach is used for community recreation. Fowler’s Beach is owned by the Long Island Civic Association (LICA) and includes open space on marshy upland portions.

The site captures views of the dunes at Fowlers Beach along with its rocky spit and tidal pool. It is westward facing with parking on the opposite side of the beach where a protected wetland is located. The site captures photos that show gradual erosion and signs of sea-level rise. 

Fowler's Beach - Long Island

Daveis Sanctuary, 1994, Owned by  the OCT, 6.8 Acres

Designated in 1946 by Mary and Mabel Daveis as a songbird sanctuary, Daveis Sanctuary was transferred in 1977 to Maine Audubon and to the OCT in 1994. A conservation easement is held by the Peaks Island Land Preserve (PILP). The woods and waterfront abut Skillings Woods. 

The monitoring post is located at the entrance to Daveis Sanctuary. It is easily accessed at the end of Ocean Spray Lane, off Seashore Road at the northeastern end of the island. The post is positioned by the first of two cobbled beach coves next to a granite bench. Photos taken at this site will help monitor and document sea level rise, storm damage and erosion.
