Peconic Baykeeper is a not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to protecting and restoring Long Island's drinkable, swimmable, and fishable waters. Established in 1998 as Long Island's clean water advocate, Peconic Baykeeper uses science, education, and law to defend critical watersheds from the tips of the Twin Forks through the Great South Bay.

Project R.I.S.E. (Recording Inundation Surrounding the Estuary), is Peconic Baykeeper's community science and outreach initiative to help document long-term climate impacts and coastal change in the Peconic Estuary Watershed. New Suffolk Waterfront is located on 2.5 acres of waterfront on the Peconic Bay, in the quiet hamlet of New Suffolk. During the 1800s and early 20th century, this site was busy commercial port especially for the oyster and scallop industry and also served as a a test site for US Navy submarines. The Waterfront is now owned and managed by a non-profit, the New Suffolk Waterfront Fund . The Fund preserves, protects, provides recreational and educational activities and ensures public access to this unique and scenic site.

Widow's Hole Preserve, 2.4 acres located on the southeastern corner of Fourth and Clark Streets. Once a storage facility for ExxonMobil the facility operated above ground storage tanks for fuel oil, kerosene and gasoline. The land was donated to Peconic Land Trust  by ExxonMobil in 2012. Over the years, erosion has made this site very vulnerable to sea level rise, which continues today at an alarming rate. Currently, there is limited access to this preserve while ongoing shoreline restoration continues.

Orient State Park

Lazy Point  is a small enclave settlement located away from the mainstream of the Town of East Hampton, situated in an area called Napeague. In the 1800s, Lazy Point became a community where shacks were constructed to house migrants who worked at the Smith Meal Fish Factory, the processing center of the small fish, menhaden. By the 1930s and 1940s there had been such an abundance of overfishing that the menhaden were rendered scarce. The result required the Smith Meal Fish Factory to shutter its doors for business in 1969. Unemployed, some of the migrant workers remained at Lazy Point with the local fishermen and baymen. Today, Lazy Point residents consist of year-round and seasonal owners, the original inhabitants of the small cottages and shacks are long gone. This chronolog station captures the ever shifting shoreline of the inlet between Lazy Point and Hick's Island, now a sanctuary for nesting shorebirds where the remnants of the old fish factory can still be seen along its shores. Lazy Point is under the jurisdiction of the East Hampton Town Trustees .

Lazy Point- Napeague

Lake Montauk is a 900-acre artificial embayment that is home to the largest commercial and sport fishing fleet in the State of New York. In 1927, real estate developer Carl Fisher opened a gap on the northern shoreline to connect the Lake to Block island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean.  After the inlet was opened, Lake Montauk replaced Fort Pond Bay as Montauk’s primary port. Mountauk Inlet and its adjacent beaches are in a constant state of transition as storms, waves, and currents deposit and remove sand. 

This Chronolog Station is located at the Town-owned parking l ot adjacent to Gosman’s Fish Market tat the Montauk Inlet.

Accabonac Harbor and Neighboring Hog Creek are often considered the Heartland of East Hampton . Accabonac Harbor or as it is known by the locals, “Bonac Crick”, has been a stronghold of fishing activity for centuries. Dories and other workboats line the shoreline on pulley rigged moorings, ready to set off for lifting pound traps or other near shore commercial fishing activities. This waterbody is well represented in our aquaculture efforts and a relative abundance of hard clams and oysters can be found on the bottomlands. Sport fishing is also popular at the inlet and along the inner and outer shoreline. Other forms of outdoor recreation, such as kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing are popular on this waterbody. The Trustees manage dredging activities on this harbor and clear the north culvert and the main inlet on a regular basis. Landing Lane is a road end owned by the Town of East Hampton and is a popular location for launching small watercraft, paddle boards and kayaks and as a stop to enjoy the scenic views of the Harbor.

Peconic Land Trust , with the support of the Orient community, Town of Southold, and the Edwards family, acquired Edwards Farm Preserve in 2015 from the Edwards family. The land comprises 21 acres of farmland, woods, and wetlands along Little Bay in Orient Point and had been under the ownership of the Edwards, Terry, and Latham families since the 19th century. As a working farm, the Edwards Farm Preserve helps to sustain the agricultural history of the community and is also important towards the restoration efforts of the surrounding wetlands and marshes. Visitors to the preserve can walk along the dirt roads that line the perimeter of the property and are welcome to observe the farming operations that carry on at the property. At its south end is the Townsend Memorial Overlook, in recognition of Joseph L. Townsend, Jr. This area is also open to the public and provides great views of Little Bay and Orient Beach State Park.

Edwards Farm Preserve- Orient

Edged in white by 11 miles of coastline, Mashomack  on Shelter Island is considered one of the richest habitats in the Northeast. Just 90 miles from New York City, the preserve covers over 2,350 acres of interlacing tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields, freshwater marshes and underwater lands.

Mashomack has a rich mix of human and natural history. This ancestral land of the Manhanset peoples has housed generations of farmers, fishers and those seeking refuge from the constant bustle of life. Few know that the preserve was once a hunt and game club, and even fewer know that it was nearly transformed into housing developments more than once. Thankfully, The Nature Conservancy , together with the residents of Shelter Island and Long Island, was able to pull together a last-minute effort to save this "Jewel of the Peconic."

Broad Cove, purchased by Peconic Land Trust in 2021, consists  of 100 acres of waterfront land on Flanders Bay in Aquebogue. Formerly a working duck farm, this property consists of woodlands, open fields, and 25 acres of wetlands overlooking Indian Island County Park. Public access is still limited as the development and restoration of the site is still in progress. Eventually, it will be open for recreation, with trails for hiking and biking, and access points for paddling in the bay.

Broad Cove- Aquebogue

In 1640, Southampton’s first settlers arrived in North Sea Harbor and upon reaching shore at this spot, one of them is said to have exclaimed: “For conscience sake, we’re on dry land.” An important whaling village called Feversham was quickly developed nearby and became the third largest port in the colonies during the 17th century, which disappeared 100 years later. In 1910, the Southampton History Museum  acquired the site. Visitors to this peaceful waterfront area can find a 20-ton boulder commemorating Southampton’s founding by following a nature trail that boasts a rich variety of native shore plants and a host of birds. Sharing a parking lot with the area is the volunteer run Conscience Point Shellfish Hatchery which supplies over 1 million oyster seeds to nearby bays.

Louse Point Park is a designated Town of East Hampton  Nature Preserve situated on a barrier of sand that separates Accabonac Harbor from Napeague Bay.  Louse Point Park is one of East Hampton Town’s most intensively, and diversely used Nature Preserves which benefits commercial fishermen, waterfowl hunters, clammers, naturalists, swimmers, hikers, paddlers and boaters as well as cyclists and joggers as a scenic destination.  In 1959, the Town with the help of Suffolk County, dredged a new and larger harbor entry at its current location.  The dredge material was used to completely fill in the natural cut and divided off the southern most part of Gerard Drive and made it part of Louse Point. Several rare or protected species visit or nest on Louse Point, including the Piping Plover and Least Tern.  One New York State listed rare plant occasionally found in this vicinity is the Sea Beach Knotweed.

The Elizabeth A. Morton National Wildlife Refuge is located near Sag Harbor, on the north shore of Long Island’s South Fork, and consists of 187 acres, including the Jessup’s Neck peninsula separating Little Peconic Bay and Noyack Bay. Its habitat diversity-- including woods, fields, ponds, and salt marsh- make it a great location for observing native wildlife, particularly birds and many threatened or endangered species. There are also several miles of trails for walking.

Historic downtown Riverhead is located on the Peconic River This site overlooks the end of the river before it makes its way out to the Peconic Bay. This estuary ecosystem is home to many different species, including waterfowl, migratory birds, fish, and aquatic invertebrates. This is also a bustling downtown area with restaurants and other attractions.

Indian Island County Park is a 275 acre parcel of land located at the estuarine mouth of the Peconic River. It’s very popular as a camping site, featuring trailer and tent areas, and restrooms and shower facilities. It’s also a great place for picnicking, complete with tables, grills, and scenic views of Flanders Bay. There are also miles of mostly sandy trails perfect for walking, running, or biking. The namesake “island” is now connected to the mainland via a white sand roadway, and provides a remote area to enjoy the outdoors, yet is still accessible by foot or vehicle.
