Horseshoe Lake loop offers a unique window into Alaska wildlife and forest disturbances. Moose prints, beaver chew, and squirrel middens are just a taste of the lurking wildlife that surrounds this lake. Horseshoe Lake is surrounded by mixed spruce forest—an ecosystem that is adapted for high severity fire. Until 2024, the last fire to happen in the frontcountry of Denali National Park and Preserve was in 1924. In addition to the views of last year’s fire, visitors can also observe tree mortality caused by native spruce beetle disturbance.
