About Guam National Wildlife Refuge
The Guam National Wildlife Refuge is located on the island of Guam, an unincorporated U.S. territory. Guam is the largest and southernmost island in the Marianas Archipelago, situated in the western Pacific Ocean, approximately 3,700 miles west of Honolulu and 1,500 miles south of Tokyo. The Guam NWR is comprised of three units: the Andersen Air Force Base Overlay Refuge Unit, the Navy Overlay Refuge Unit, and the Ritidian Unit.
The Ritidian Unit is located on the northern tip of Guam and encompasses approximately 1,217 acres, including 385 terrestrial acres and 832 acres of submerged offshore area. Limestone forests, limestone strand, coastal beach strand, and coral reefs are ecosystems within the Ritidian Unit. It is designated as critical habitat for the Mariana fruit bat, Mariana crow, and the Guam kingfisher. Ritidian is also a nesting area for Green sea turtles.
Ritidian is highly valued as a sacred place to the people of Guam. Cultural resources of CHamoru heritage and more reflect the Guam's complex history. Your photos will contribute to track changes in vegetation and coastal areas over time.
