The crowdsourced time lapse from Pass Mountain Overlook gives us a unique opportunity to watch a full year of ecological changes in just a few seconds. Watch as winter snow melts away to reveal abundant wildflowers which, in turn, recede to verdant green trees that will slowly transform into vibrant fall foliage before our eyes. In early January, 2021, the area in the foreground was mowed as part of our vista management program. Check back this spring to see it regrow before your eyes!
Just 75 miles from the bustle of Washington, D.C., Shenandoah National Park is a land bursting with cascading waterfalls, spectacular vistas, fields of wildflowers, and quiet wooded hollows. The 200,000+ acres of protected lands offer an incredibly important haven for deer, songbirds, black bears, and many other species. Shenandoah's four distinct seasons set it apart from many other public lands. The changes that occur throughout the year, which we can now view through these citizen-captured timelapses, give us a fascinating view into the ecological systems that are constantly at work here.
